FRESNO, Calif. – Central Valley Fuego FC welcomed back Richmond Kickers on Saturday, August 20 to Fresno State Soccer Stadium for Building the Central Valley Night. This was the second meeting between the two teams.
In the first 45 minutes, Fuego FC and the Kickers both came with high energy. We saw several shots on goal from the home side. Mitch North recorded his second regular season appearance. In the 22nd minute a foul on Alexis Cerritos was called outside the box. Victor Falck takes the free kick and misses but successfully finishes on the rebound. Fuego FC took the lead ending the first half.
In the final half, Christian Chaney and Maxi Schenfeld were subbed in for Jose Villarreal and Villyan Bijev after a great effort from both starting forwards. After a throw-in to Chaney, he attempts a bicycle kick but was not able to get a good foot on it. Schendfeld completes the attempt on a one-touch making the score 2-0 before the 70th minute. The visitors got a foul in the box and Emiliano Terzaghi made the PK. In stoppage time the visitors added another goal ending the match in a draw.

TEAM PERSPECTIVE
“I believe tonight we were very close to putting together one of our best performances of the season. Unfortunately we couldn’t close the game down in the last minutes of the game,” said head coach Martín Vásquez. “We scored two very nice goals and created other good chances. I am very pleased with an excellent first half. We kept Richmond Kickers, the team with the most goals scored in the league, to zero goals and limited them to no chances.”
“I thought we played some really good football at times and I think that we were entertaining to watch,” said Victor Falck. “We lost focus on the key moments and we’re kicking ourselves for not getting three points on a night where I thought our performance deserved it.”
“It feels like a loss when you concede like that in stoppage time, but there’s positives to build on going into the next game,” said Nathan Smith. “We’ll work on the things we need to improve on and focus on how we’re going to get three points next week.”
“It feels weird because we were up 2-0 and then the tie at the end leaves a bad taste for everything we did to be up in the game. In soccer when you don’t close games like this you end up paying consequences and that is something we need to learn fast so this does not happen again,” said Maxi Schenfeld. “We had very good moments with and without the ball in the majority of the game, in my opinion, which is good to keep building for the future. Tomorrow we start focusing on Tormenta. It is going to be a good opportunity for us to keep fighting for a spot in the playoffs. I do want to thank all the fans for being out there with us every weekend. It feels very good to represent the Central Valley.”
